Plantar Fascia Stretch

Plantar fascia is a ligament that runs underneath the bottom of your foot. It acts as a shock absorbed in the arch of the foot. When the ligament becomes sore and irritated, it is referred to in injury terms as plantar fasciitis, where the ligament is inflamed.

Plantar fasciitis is linked to other lower leg injuries such as shin splints, Achilles tendinitis, and tight calf/gastrocnemius muscles in the back of the lower leg. Quite often it is a chain reaction of one injury/condition on the other.

Footwear can also affect the plantar fascia and surrounding muscles as if the foot is not moving correctly, then additional stress is put through the muscles and joints. Changing footwear, or correct use of orthotics or insoles, can help alleviate the stress in the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons) as well as the joints.
